Human Rights and Democracy Media Center- SHAMS, urges the authorized bodies and legal organizations, to investigate the death of the inmate (Nasssr ed- Din Muhammad Mustafa Abu El- Eish). Abu El- Eish is 67 years old and he has been interrogated since 2015 and was sentenced to death. He passed away in Gaza Rehabilitation and Correction Center on Saturday 19/8/2023.

SHAMS Center affirms the necessity to form an investigation committee from all the local and international human rights and legal institutions in addition to representatives of the family and its lawyer. The committee should include also a specialized independent doctor to be nominated by the family, and the findings of the investigation should be published to the public.

SHAMS Center stresses that the Rehabilitation and Correction Centers in the Gaza Strip should respect The United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners- Mandela Rules. The Center stresses that the Rules should fully be respected in dealing with the persons held in custody in the Rehabilitation and Correction Centers. There should be a focus on respecting the health conditions identified by the given rules, taking into consideration that the deceased inmate suffered from chronic diseases, including heart disease and arteriosclerosis.

SHAMS Center calls upon the status quo government in the Gaza Strip to respect the human rights conventions and treaties, especially those to which the State of Palestine had acceded. There should be respect for the fundamental rights of the citizens as identified by the Palestinian Basic Law/ 2003.
