“SHAMS” center confirms that the policies and directions of the new Israeli government headed by the head of the Likud Party, Benjamin Netanyahu, will be a continuation of the approach of successive Israeli governments. In other words, this government will continue its denial of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, turning its back on international law, including international humanitarian law. Also, the emergence of the role of the extreme right-wing Israeli government includes settlers which means a further escalation of the pace of events in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In fact, its policy is represented by the daily invasion of cities, villages and camps, and the accompanying grave violations against Palestinian citizens including killings, assassinations, collective punishments, arrests, systematic targeting of youth and children and attacks on peaceful marches.
They also include tightening restrictions imposed on freedom of movement and movement through fixed barriers erected at the gates of cities, villages, and camps, or through mobile (flying) barriers, and the closure and siege of cities, villages, and camps through iron gates or cement blocks as well as the demolition of homes and facilities, and the accompanying forced displacement of citizens. Furthermore, ethnic cleansing was practiced in light of the continuation of security and administrative control over the so-called areas (C), which covers an area of more than 62% of the total area of the West Bank.
Such area contains the vast majority of the natural resources of the Palestinians who were prevented from investing their lands or even building on them leading to the confiscation of their lands. This is in addition to the continued construction of settlements, the expansion of existing ones, the construction of new bypass streets, and the continuation of daily attacks by settlers under the protection of the occupation army.
In flagrant violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law including the Fourth Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilians Under Occupation and the Hague Conventions. Consequently, “Shams” center confirms that the policy of double standards practiced by influential countries in international politics is one of the main reasons for the continuation of the occupying state with its grave violations against the Palestinians.
Still, it constitutes a cover for the occupying state and an umbrella for impunity which serves as a green light for the occupying government to continue its aggression against the Palestinian people. Also, it is stated that human rights should not be in any way subject to bargaining, or that it is a card of the foreign policy of this or that country, as human rights are the same for all people without discrimination.
Furthermore, it explained that this policy is based on unfair discrimination between peoples was manifested on many occasions. As the world has won to provide protection to a number of peoples of the world, with various pretexts, the same world still refuses to provide protection for the Palestinian people under occupation
The implementation of the United Nations resolutions that oblige the occupying power to respect the rights of the Palestinians, and to leave their land requires international solidarity. In other words, the countries that anti-Palestinians countries do not hesitate to violate the UN’s resolutions concerning Palestinians’ sovereignty on their land.
“SHAMS” center emphasizes that the policy of the occupation government towards the Palestinian civil society is an aggressive policy as it is towards reducing the area of civil space. It further tightens the stranglehold on the work of civil institutions by the Israeli occupation, represented by arresting Palestinian civil society activists, preventing them from traveling, pursuing them, and restricting freedom of movement. This leads to the defamation of Palestinian human rights organizations, as the occupation wages a frenzied war against Palestinian human rights organizations no less ferocious than what is happening on the ground, with the aim of silencing and neutralizing human rights institutions by mobilizing huge potentials and financial and political resources, through an organized media machine, and malicious forged reports.
This is done to distort the image of its civil work, with the aim of breaking the thorn of Palestinian civil society and systematically restricting the Palestinian civil and human rights space, which monitors the grave violations committed by the occupying power against Palestinian citizens.
“SHAMS” center considers that the conditions of the defenders of human rights in the countries including Palestine and other NGOs are difficult including the exposure to threats and assaults harassment, being attacked publicly harming their personal safety with the intent obstruction their work and undermining their credibility.
Finally, those defenders face threats, harassment, attacks daily despite the actual development of the International Law in terms of its supervision mechanism. However, it does not develop in terms of cooperation mechanisms as well as the guarantee of the protection of human rights which is the responsibility of every country in the first place.
