Ramallah: Human Rights and Democracy Media Center “SHAMS” concluded a training course on human rights and democracy involving a group of Sharia students participating from Al Quds Open University with its campuses in Ramallah, Nablus and Salfeet, College of Islamic Sciences Al- Thahriya, and students of Jurisprudence & law from Arab American University.
The training course was opened by Dr. Khalid Al-Sarahneh, Dean of the College of Islamic Sciences, welcoming the attendees and emphasizing the importance of the training topic. He expressed his thinking to” SHAMS” Center for their continuous cooperation and efforts in targeting the Sharia students within a range of training courses.
The training course aims at promoting and disseminating the concept of democracy and human rights among Sharia students in the Palestinian universities, enhancing the knowledge of citizenship concerning their rights & duties, and informing the participants about international conventions and treaties on human rights in terms of definition, features and types.
In turn, the trainer Iyad Shtayyeh learned about the participants, and he did teambuilding & ice-breaking exercises in order to integrate the team in the training and prepare members to deepen the dialogue.
Whereas the trainer Huthaifa Saeed addressed the concept of citizenship, which represents a contractual relationship between citizens and the political system on the rights and duties as guaranteed by the Constitution, and provided a historical overview of the concept, its pillars, rights & duties in its context.
For his part, Dr. Walid Salem addressed human rights: its definition, characteristics, types and human rights within international conventions and treaties. In a different context, Dr. Ayman Yousef tackled democracy: its definition, forms, importance, democracy and Shura (consultation).
At the end of the training course, participants recommended the need to address democracy within the framework of Islamic education, as it includes the principles of democracy that conform to Islamic standards, selecting titles that provide participants with an educational structure, and enhance openness to different themes, activating the role of young people in understanding their rights and duties. In addition to the need to involve and target Sharia students in various training courses, to further hold similar training courses and to integrate a larger number of students to generalize advantage.
